Janet C. Scott, Esq. is an experienced litigator. She has experience in several practice areas, including criminal law, education law, employment, and insurance defense. Janet previously worked as an associate with Alexander & Associates, the Law Offices of Tavis L. Knighten, P.C. and as a Legal Compliance Analyst with the DeKalb County Board of Education’s Office of Internal Affairs.
As an associate with Alexander & Associates, Janet litigated teacher termination hearings, including cases involving the CRCT cheating problem within the Atlanta Public School District, and federal and state civil cases for multiple metro Atlanta school districts. Moreover, she learned the inner workings of school districts while employed with the DeKalb County School District’s Office of Internal Affairs. She is also a former educator.
Currently, Janet’s primary legal practice allows her to combine her knowledge of the law with her previous experience as an educator. Janet has litigated teacher termination hearings and federal and state civil cases for metro Atlanta school districts. As an associate with Smith, Welch, Webb & White, LLC, she represents numerous school districts within Georgia on a variety of issues.
A cum laude graduate of Spelman College, Janet also holds a Master of Arts degree in Education from Mercer University. She attended Texas Wesleyan School of Law, Fort Worth, Texas, and earned her law degree from John Marshall Law School, Atlanta, Georgia.
During law school, Janet interned with Emory University School of Law’s Barton Child Law and Policy Clinic. She also served as an Extern at the Fulton County Superior Court with The Honorable Bensonetta Tipton Lane.
She has served in numerous volunteer positions with the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (“GABWA”), for example, Historian, Parliamentarian, and Member at large. Currently, Janet serves GABWA as Vice President and as a Director on the GABWA Foundation Board. Janet also served as Co-Chair of the Aspiring Youth Program Committee and as the Director of the American Bar Association Awards for the Georgia Young Lawyers’ Division (“YLD”). Presently, Janet also volunteers for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and serves on the United States Selective Service Board for DeKalb County, Georgia. Lastly, she is a graduate of Leadership DeKalb, Class of 2010.
Janet has been recognized by the Georgia Young Lawyers’ Division, twice, for her outstanding service to the YLD and by the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers as a Scholarship Recipient and an Outstanding Law Student.
Prior to attending law school, Janet taught at Chamblee Middle School and was recognized in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
