Why Diversity in the Legal Profession Matters

By Janet C. Scott, Esq.

Since I entered the legal profession, there has always been this overwhelming movement to promote diversity. A post-civil rights era American, I was naïve to believe that we had overcome and that the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. had filtered into all segments of society, including the legal profession. A teacher prior to becoming a lawyer, I certainly embraced the concept of diversity. Not understanding diversity while charged with teaching America’s future would have been, simply, unacceptable.

Fast-forward to my journey into the practice of law, the concept of diversity as it relates to the legal profession seemed to still have its obstacles to overcome. I reflect on my first year of law school in a foreign land (Texas), and I recall the strange looks I received as one of a few that looked like me in my 1L class. Uncomfortable with the isolation I felt when changing my environment from being one of many to one of only a few, I made the decision to transfer to a law school in a familiar territory. The need for diversity in law school, however, continued to persist as I remained one of a few.

Today, as more women and other minorities have entered the legal profession, it is important that the legal profession continue to reflect America’s diversity. Now more than ever, lawyers are faced with solving complex legal problems, including but not limited to, women’s rights issues, domestic disputes, human rights issues, labor disputes, and numerous other legal challenges. Not only has the legal profession embraced the need for diversity, but so has Smith, Welch, Webb & White, LLC. Our attorneys practice law with the understanding that it is only through our differences that we can work to find our common interests.
