July 4th Safety

The Fourth of July weekend is a time for Americans to celebrate the nation’s birth with family and friends with summer fun, fireworks, and barbecues. Millions of people will take to the roadways over this holiday weekend to get to their loved ones. According to a AAA survey, there will be over 37 million drivers this holiday. That is a 2.9 percent increase since just last year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been working the past few months circulating safety campaigns in preparation for this mass traveled weekend. NHTSA’s safety campaigns are aimed at preventing drunk driving over the upcoming weekend. The Fourth of July weekend is one of the deadliest holiday periods of the year due to drunk driving accidents. According to NHTSA, in 2015 146 people were killed in crashes that involved at least one driver with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. Furthermore, 92 people were killed in crashes that involved a driver with a BAC of .15 or higher, which is twice the legal limit. With offices along the I-75 Corridor on the Southside of Atlanta, we unfortunately come into contact with many injured clients who were the victims of this kind of negligence.

Drunk driving is preventable. It is important to be prepared and not to let your holiday plans get away from you. Here are a few tips from NHTSA to stay safe:

  • Even if you have only had one alcoholic beverage, assign a designated driver or plan to use public transportation,
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact your local law enforcement agency immediately, and
  • If you see a friend about to take the wheel, take the keys away and make arrangements to get your friend home safely.
